Sleeping Habits of a Healthy Baby

Newborn babies sleep a lot and have unpredictable sleeping patterns, and this makes it hard for moms to figure out when the baby is supposed to sleep to avoid long waking hours in the night soothing a baby to go back to sleep. Babies have a different sleeping pattern from grownups and therefore need to learn these sleeping tips to avoid being a frustrated mom.

Most kids take a nap for about two to four hours in about 17 hours a day. This process is very frequent. On his 17 hours of sleep time he/ she could sleep in any place like on shoulders, cribs, strollers or on beds. The sleeping patterns begin to change as the baby grows. The more the child grows, the shorter time the baby sleeps during the day and the longer the baby sleeps during the night.

I will highlight a few tips on how healthy sleep for your kid

(a) Let the child sleep for many hours as possible

Most babies aged one two months cannot keep awake for more than two hours. They spend most of their time sleeping and you deprive them of this you end up making the child fatigued making the child unable to sleep.

(b) Don’t interact with the kid during the night

Why? You ask. Because by doing so the child will not learn to differentiate between the day and the night. Play with the kid as much as possible during the day but when it comes to night do not attempt to, just sooth the baby to go back to sleep and with time the child understands this sleeping habits and begins to get used to them and follows them also with time. Ensure there are minimal noises in the night and the baby’s room is dimly lit and avoid talking to the baby too much during the evening. These are the signs the baby takes up in discerning the difference.

(c) Know when the baby is tired and needs to take a nap

Different babies portray different signs when they want to sleep like yawning, rubbing their eyes tirelessly, pulling their ears, become more nagging than normal, crying for no precise reason, etc. ensure you look out for the signs, your baby shows then you can put your baby to sleep. Some moms say once you become a mother you develop some sixth sense from the bond between you and your child and you can always know when the baby is about to take a nap.

(d) Create a bedtime cycle for your child

Bedtime routines enable your kid to be more relaxed especially when he/she anticipates what’s next and this contributes to the baby falling asleep more quickly. You can start your bed ritual with your baby like bathing him, changing diapers and clothing him. Then put him to bed, telling him stories.

(e) Put him down to bed and let him sleep on his own

Most parents will disagree with this method, but it is efficient. The baby learns with time to go to bed without being soothed and with time adopt this sleeping habit unlike when he is used to being put to sleep. A baby who takes this technique will even put himself back to sleep in the night and this saves you as a parent big time. This method applies to kids aged one to two months.

(f) Position the baby his/her back

You may find that a child passed on while sleeping and you are up and down looking for possible causes and you discover it’s due to the baby’s sleeping position. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) which occurs mostly in premature and low-birth-weight babies, children whose mothers never went to antenatal and to babies whose mothers smoke. There are no known symptoms of this disorder and to avoid this, it is advisable that the baby sleeps on his back rather than his stomach.

Baby tips for first-time moms

Being a mom is such an awesome feeling, though new moms may find it a challenging season. Some may sometimes be scared of handling their baby. It is normal for you to feel that way but one thing to remember there is no such thing as a being a perfect mum, but that does not give you the opportunity to be reckless.

Here are some tips to guide you

  1.  Listen to your baby

Once you welcome your newborn into the world, friends, and relatives will be there to support you and give you all kinds of advice on how to take care of your baby sometimes you end up being confused. At this point, I would say that you allow your child to lead the way and let him/her tell you what it needs. With time you learn to distinguish when the baby is hungry or tired or just being fussy.

  1. Daddy-baby bond

This is significant because the child is now familiar to someone else other than you. A fathers touch and voice is entirely different from yours, and the child learns that he/she can receive comfort from the father too and these will make your roles as parents comfortable as you can both assist in taking care of the baby. Let the dad to spend more time with the baby and even if the baby cries avoid the urge to go and pick him/her up just let the dad handle it that way even when you are not around the baby can learn to be with someone else other than you.

  1. Feed your baby while awake

Always ensure the child eats well before he/she goes to bed and if the baby starts falling asleep apply some techniques like massaging the cheek to enable the baby to eat faster as this will prevent the long sleepless nights for feeding the baby at night.

  1. Don’t be quiet when the baby is asleep

Most moms will think that it is good for the whole house to be quiet while the baby is asleep. Well, I tend to disagree because by the time the baby is born, it is already used to noises you made while you carried him in your womb, therefore if you change the routine, the child becomes used to the silence and whenever there is noise the child is affected. However, if the child is used to the usual house noises, he/she can go to sleep and will not interfere with normal activities.

  1. Always sooth your baby

Babies love it when they are soothed, and it relaxes them especially if they were crying because of insecurities. Kids can be comforted by patting them on the back, holding them on the side, shushing, swaddling, swinging or even breastfeeding them.

  1. Being prepared

By the time your baby hits three weeks old, you are used to a particular routine. It is important to always prepare for the next duty after you are done with one. For example, if you know you are about to feed the baby, start preparing the feeding materials and also ensure that you also take care of your body too. Hygiene is a number one priority while handling the baby.

  1. The baby’s first bath

Before you give your child the first birth, it is important to ensure that the baby will be warm enough because remember they were used to the womb’s warmth. Ensure you wash your child in a closed warm room where there is no wind or cold. If the chamber is cold, it is important to heat the house first to prevent the cold air from getting to the baby’s body.

  1. Babies cry for a reason

Being a first-time mom, you find it difficult to discern the different kinds of baby cries. They could be for various reasons like a diaper change, they want food, want to sleep, they are unwell, upset, cry for attention, etc. it is important that you learn your baby’s cries so that you know what the child needs in what situation.
